At the start of the war the 1st Worcestershire battalion were in Egypt but they soon returned to England where they joined 24 Brigade of 8th Division. The division landed in France on 6th November, 1914 and on 22nd November 1st Worcestershire moved into the trenches at La Gorgue next to Estaires where they remained until relieved on 25th November. During these three days in these trenches three men were killed, including Frederick Smith on 24th November. |
